“Silent Crow’s Cabin by Adrienne N. Neary follows a privileged but emotionally wounded law student named Jesse Caldwell. His mother, Celia, is overbearing, and he wonders if he will be able to make it through law school with her pestering him. The one place where he finds respite is Fox Hollow Farm in the company of his beloved show jumper, Bentley. But Bentley dies mysteriously, and while still struggling with grief, a catastrophic fall leaves Jesse in a coma. He experiences a near-death journey where he reunites with his late father and has glimpses of the nature of the soul. After regaining consciousness, Jesse flees to Triple R Ranch in Wyoming, where he helps in rehabilitating a brutalized stallion rescued from Argentina. Jesse heals slowly, alongside the stallion, but with investigations into his mother’s financial crimes and another tragedy, he is forced to find meaning beyond grief.
Adrienne N. Neary’s novel can be read as a spiritual allegory or a murder mystery. She cleverly examines depression, the human disconnection from nature, trauma, and spirituality. The characters are well-developed and multilayered, and her use of anthropomorphism gives sentient qualities to animals like Bentley and Jistu. The parts of the story told from the stallion’s perspective are revelatory and heartbreaking. Jesse’s journey felt to me like a metaphor, a lens through which one can understand the connection between humans and nature and the spiritual currents that run through seemingly mundane experiences. This novel has the quality of a fable, but it is also a story of love, a journey of a young man’s quest for meaning and healing. Silent Crow’s Cabin is filled with well-crafted, focused, and emotionally engaging scenes, like when Jesse spends the night outside the stallion’s paddock, enduring its terrified charges until fear gives way to trust. This novel captivated me with its exceptional storytelling and the lessons one learns through the characters.”
